Is your website ready for the upcoming Penguin update 4. 0? - Profit Hunter

The launch of the updated algorithm was scheduled for the end of 2015, but then its start was postponed to January 2016. This means that all webmasters whose sites were hit by the previous update (in December 2014) now have a chance to recover. The 2014 version was not updated automatically, unlike the coming one, which will detect the appearance and disappearance of "bad" backlinks almost immediately.

  1. Anchor text
  2. Unexpected downloads and too many referring pages
  3. Refusal of links in webmaster tools
  4. Optimize internal links

Penguin 4. 0 will function in real-time mode: Google will detect violators instantly and just as quickly rescue sites that have removed spam links from under the filter. I would like to believe that spam has ceased to be a problem, and the seo industry has switched to more reasonable methods of promotion, however, this is not the case yet. And with each update of the algorithm, many winners and losers appear. Penguin's next exit is unlikely to be the exception.

The audit of the reference profile comes first in the plans of the optimizers, especially if the project is developing without roughness. However, now is the time to conduct a total check before Google makes its next surprise.

Even if it were not, it would never be more critical to evaluate the site’s reference profile. Spam happens even if you didn’t plan to purchase “bad” links.

Anchor text

Sounds beaten, but it’s worth repeating: you do not need to add only direct entries of keys to the anchors. Diversify the profile with direct links without an anchor or with an anchor to the brand, add diluted keywords or service words (here, here, etc.) to the link text. There is no exact percentage ratio in the use of different types of anchors, but in general, you should focus on branded links, since it is with their help that it is easier for target visitors to find and remember you.

Unexpected jumps and too many referring pages

With a deep analysis of backlinks, something unusual is often found, and this manifests itself in the form of sudden jumps on line graphs. Consider these two profiles for two different websites (domain names are hidden for privacy reasons, but we guarantee that these are real-life projects).

Site B is consistently gaining the number of referring domains in the last 12 months (red line). Some backlinks were cleared, and the number of referring pages (blue line) decreased slightly. This means that a couple of donors probably referred to site B on almost every page (this is a “red card” for spam promotion methods from Google’s point of view).

Site A also steadily increased the number of referring domains, but the sudden jump in referring pages between June and July makes you wonder. Anything that could provoke him in such a short period of time could attract the attention of PS, since such a phenomenon was hardly natural. It is hard to say what really happened just by looking at the graph: it does not reveal the whole picture. However, this is similar to putting links from multiple pages on multiple optimizer domains, which signals spam for Google.

Refusing links in webmaster tools

When it comes to renouncing links, you can come across a lot of conflicting information about whether to abandon them. On the one hand, it makes sense to tell Google clearly that you can’t do anything with these spam links leading to your site. On the other hand, the procedure of rejecting backlinks is not a complete replacement for their manual removal, so the question arises: is it worth drawing attention to what may not even be noticed by Google? If you decide to do this, then this manual will help you to remove backlinks.

Note that since the Penguin becomes an automatic algorithm and not a manual punishment of sites, there is no need to send a request to Google for review after removing backlinks.

Optimize internal links

External links attract the most attention, but you shouldn’t ignore the signals that you are sending to Google via internal link. It does not have a strong influence on the ranking, but the internal reference profile significantly affects how robots index the site. These are the links that you have control over. You can tell the search engines which pages are most important, and how they are thematically related to each other. Internal links can also be re-optimized, as well as external ones.

Remember these things to keep a “clean” internal reference profile:

  • vary the link texts, do not use only direct entries as anchors;
  • refer only to relevant pages that complement each other, so that links clicked more frequently;
  • Build a hierarchy.

Thus, in order to protect yourself before the next update, it is important to pay attention to link anchors, avoid reference explosions, correctly optimize the site structure and abandon spam promotion methods.
